چکیده

This paper distinguishes, at a high level, the differences between the architectures of workflow management systems. Its main function is to clarify the segmentation between autonomous and embedded workflow deployments. Workflow is the automation of a business process, in whole or in part, during which documents, information, or tasks are passed from one participant to another for action, according to a software representation of the process logic, the workflow model. A workflow management system defines, creates and manages the execution of workflows, through the use of software, running on one or more workflow engines, which is able to interpret the process definition, interact with workflow participants, and, where required, invoke the use of information technology (IT) tools and applications. A workflow engine provides the run-time execution of business processes. Engines can be embedded within other applications or they can be deployed as independent applications inter-operating with other applications. Some engines can be deployed in either mode. It is claimed that some application components, which deal with rules or exceptions, are in fact workflow engines, whilst they do not display most features that identify common workflow features. With the advent of new requirements for workflow engines to inter-operate for tasks such as Supply Chain Management, it is important for the market to be able to distinguish between inaccessible rulesbased application components, and workflow engines, be they embedded or not.

Tradeoffs among Paradigms in Supply Chain Management

Supply chain paradigms have been explored, but it is still very difficult to integrate some concepts that seem to be contradictory. This paper explores production and supply chain paradigms such as lean, agile, resilient and green. Tradeoffs between these management paradigms are identified and explored to help organizations and their supply chains to become more efficient and competitive. This...

Enterprise Modelling with FUNSOFT Nets

In this article we propose workflow techniques such as FUNSOFT for the specification of ODP Enterprise Models. Workflow-orientation as one of the most popular management paradigms and object-orientation as the state of the art software development paradigm will be integrated in the ODP framework. Our example is related to our experience in the air traffic control application domain and will dem...

Persisting Autonomous Workflow for Mobile Agents Using a Mobile Thread Programming Model

In this paper, we present a Mobile Thread Programming Model (MTPM), a model to simulate the persistence of a migratory thread, to overcome the problem of coexistence of mobility, persistence and autonomy for mobile agents. An advantage of MTPM over other code mobility paradigms is that the model simulates strong mobility at the application-level rather than at the system-level as used in many s...

Automatic vs Manual Provenance Abstractions: Mind the Gap

In recent years the need to simplify or to hide sensitive information in provenance has given way to research on provenance abstraction. In the context of scientific workflows, existing research provides techniques to semi-automatically create abstractions of a given workflow description, which is in turn used as filters over the workflow’s provenance traces. An alternative approach that is com...

Flexible Service Composition

Service-oriented architectures are a popular architectural paradigm for building software applications from a number of loosely coupled, distributed services. Through a set of procedural rules, workflow technologies define how groups of services coordinate with one another to achieve a shared task. A problem with workflow specifications is that often the patterns of interaction between the dist...
